I loved reading your story! It's election night- and my husband mentioned that if Prop 30 passes- he wants to move to Texas- of course- Austin is where I'd want to live. I've never been there- but have heard so many good things about it! All of the reasons you stated for leaving California are the same for us. Many of my husbands clients, who work in tech, are also moving to Texas. YOur story has motivated me to really look into it!

Greetings Steve,,

I am asking for your honest opinion, since you very likely know much about how videographers work.

I am offering a video asset management tool for video professionals but I have no idea how we measure up to our competition.

How are you handling your important videos today

Would you give it a test run and share your opinion via email? www.videocataloger.com/download

Best regards/

To me it's really about the offline consumer - brand relationship. I 'broke up' with Bosch because I tired of my dishwasher constantly breaking down, and Bosch's refusal to make me whole. Subaru, in contrast, has earned my loyalty and trust, and thus my online social loyalty.

Hi,

My name is Peter Simmons and I have
sold and produced over $10,000,000 in media production: video, web
and print. I have decided to share my sales skills and process for
free on a video blog.

Please help get the word out ( or send
me your ideas on how I can get the word out!) about this video blog
series.

Here is part one: Selling to
Corporations. ( If you click on the sponsored ads on the video you
will help me fund more of these educational programs. )

In some respects, I'd be less concerned with the negative comments impacting a handful of readers than I would be about the negative comments affecting SEO outcomes. That said, I agree with your response. The more important questions aren't really around whether to link or not but instead are what is causing the complaints in the first place, is the company actively listening and responding to people who are complaining on that page, and how they might get their advocates involved. If the content of the page is positive and the comments negative, I'd generally recommend they link to the page but also get active in responding to consumer concerns, both to improve their relationships with individual customers and also to demonstrate to others that they care and are proactive.

I just read this blog and found it very inspiring. My wife and I sometimes talk about packing up and moving somewhere new. How is the transition going? You should check out invodo.com They produce e-commerce videos and do a lot of them. They are headquarted there in Austin. We've done a few shoots with them here in Atlanta.

Hey Paul,

I'm was raised in San Diego (Chula Vista actually) back in the early 70's...Went to Cal Poly SLO in early 80's. Live in ABQ back in the 1990's...Have been in Sacramento from Aug 2000.

Hubby and I are political independents -- fiscal conservatives and socially (tolerant) liberals...Disgusted at how CA legislature cannot get a clue on much of anything...and are quite worried about the state's financial crisis.
Not into guns, but can respect that some people want them...We just think there should be some reasonable regulations. Not religious though spiritual. Love the outdoors, but are wondering about 1) the amount of "environmental consciousness" in & around Austin 2) the amount of humidity (Albuquerque was too dry for us in winter), and 3) allergies. Any comments from you or other posters on these topics?

Also, why the "Keep Austin Weird"...From the typical Texan's view, why is Austin thought to be "weird"... [I'm assuming the "weirdness" would be mainstream and therefore unnoticed in CA!]

thanks,
Kathy in Sacramento

Yeah - for sure. I haven't been to Boston in 12 years but if I ever do make it back for a paying gig (or maybe even a conference) then I will definitely hit you up. How's everything going at the old PermissionTV aka Visible Gains? I actually had to think for about 20 seconds there to remember your old name.

Hey Paul,

Great post, although you can't manage your mailing queue, you can search for videos that are not available to streaming and add them from the app. Also here are the component cables you need to hook an iPhone or iPad to a television. $50:

I have lived all over the US and a few places overseas, and I've always thought Texas had by far the highest standard of living of any place I have seen. When living in NYC, San Fran, London, Palo Alto, etc., I have always secretly wondered, "Why don't these people just move to Houston, Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio? They would have a much, much higher standard of living in any of those places." I guess the secret is out! :) Welcome to Austin.

We haven't regretted leaving for one day. I have a little remorse career-wise some days, but I've even started a new one of those with some production dabblings on the side. So overall - it was a great move for us, as I'm sure it will be for you! I'm proud of you guys! It takes a lot to do what you did!

Great post! Really enjoyed reading it. Funny, I feel the same way you do about So. Cal, and desire most of things you listed as well. I'm doing the "where do I want to move to when school ends next year". While I don't think it will be Texas, I wouldn't turn it down if the situation was right.

Good luck to you and the family, God will continue to direct and bless you all.

AHAHAHA! I thought software written by Apple doesn't crash because it's better etc.. Actually I know better, but the point is this story sounds just the same as it does on past windows updates or in fact other OS's. Nothing is perfect and we must fiddle with software all the time no matter what. Kind of pointless to spend more for a mac to end up with a very similar situation. Plus a slow computer because apple rips people by giving them slower hardware for more money.

Fine, thank you a lot for the info, Paul. I'm always looking how to avoid the commercial plugins, for I hate "predigested" stuff, the main thing for me in FCP is that I can control so much manually.
To the comments of Bernie comment: I think it's more than ok to critic, for Bernie is not talking about content, but form, arguing that for his image of pro Paul maybe wants to have a cleaner presentation. Maybe he wants, maybe not, that's his choice - by the way, for me it was quite clean. Just a critic to Bernies critic - guess it's more effective if he doesn't mix in his comment negative expressions, like "I’d go buggy", the "spliff" and mainly "the saliva blast". They don't really are necessary for getting the point, and can sound like en attack.
thnx again.

Hi Paul, thats awesome. New media is such a huge growing market with lots of opportunity for content producers. We have been doing great with placing music in web video as well.

Hi,

First off, let me just say great article. Like you I do editing and honestly I own a MacBook Air. The reason I was out searching for articles is to see if an Air can technically support FCP. I do have a few thoughts on the Air, been an Air user for almost a year now.

Let me begin by saying I know most people miss the point of the Air. When I first watch the KeyNote, I loved the idea of the Air. Being a 'road warrior' I love the fact that I can run around freely and not feel weighed down by my lappie (trust me I used to lag a MacBook Pro around with me, not fun)For this fact alone, I think the MacBook Air serve it's purpose to a T.

I know I know, the rest of the world would start pointing out the fact that it doesn't not have an optical drive, nor Firewire, nor great specs. But let's just bring everyone back to reality a little. The Air was never meant to be that. The Air was designed first and foremost with portability in mind, and SOME computing power second.

To me the Air is a companion piece, a Best Supporting Actor, never the lead. Ir's great when you need to rush from meeting to meeting, kill some time while getting some work done inbetween, being able to 'compute' anywhere in the world (including the loo). For the heavy duty stuff, there's where the lead actor comes in.

I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro set-up at home and the office, these are my big boys who i go to for the heavy lifting. But when I'm out there, talking to my clients, showing them a first draft, and they get to the irritating place of "well how would it look like if that came first, perhaps you could show us in the next draft." It would be great if I could just whip out FCP, rearrange it on the spot and get them to decide. I know I've been doing that for my other work stuff (not video stuff yet) and it has saved me countless of hours and countless of unnecessary drafts.

For that and that alone, I think the MacBook Air is an essential addition to any "road warriors" toolset.

Just my 2 cents worth

Really nifty video. I'm kind of curious whether there will be more to the campaign and whether you'll be doing more of this stuff though it seems I stumbled on it a few months after the fact. I have to admit I haven't been following this particular Beta and haven't seen these particular videos before. They're really quite clever.

I love my Macbook AIR for its portability and have come to peace with living the WiFi live and needing to use an external hard drive to burn CDs. But just now, my teenaged daughter has determined she will become a film director. I need very quick advice about what hard drive camcorders there are that will work well with iMovie and the AIR, using of course the USB port. I only see comments on what DOESN'T work, or has elaborate work-arounds. I hope to pay attention just to the film editing, not worry about the interface of my equipment. We have never tried to use video before, and our comfortable price range would be around $300-$500. - Linda

It's funny. About a year ago I was completely aligned with your article but I don't think I'll ever log and capture again... famous last words!

It puts the air back into play for me...
but the screen size still stinks.
