Quicktime 7.4 and Adobe After Effects CS3 - WARNING!

Word on the Creative Cow forums this morning is that the newly released Apple Quicktime 7.4 upgrade causes a MAJOR problem with Adobe After Effects where the system crashes after 10 minutes or so of rendering. So far this has been confirmed on After Effects CS3 - not sure about previous versions. This is happening to multiple people and this occurs immediate after upgrading to Quicktime 7.4. Again, like with all Apple updates - DO NOT BE THE FIRST ONE TO UPGRADE. Wait until others do it and take time to read the forums and see what everyone else’s experiences are. This should be especially true with Quicktime as the last few releases have been unstable at best. This should be even more critical if you work under tight deadlines and absolutely NEED to deliver.

Here’s a link to the forum post. Hopefully Apple can take care of this one quickly: http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/2/925464

Update: I’m getting a lot of traffic here from Google from people who are having the same problems.  There seems to be no fix from Apple yet but some people have successfully downgraded from Quicktime 7.4 to Quicktime 7.3.1 and that should get you back to working. Here are the steps.

1. Download the older quicktime for your OS:
Panther: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime731forpanther.html
Tiger: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime731fortiger.html
Leopard: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime731forleopard.html
2. Download and install the program Pacifist.
3. From Pacifist, install the Quicktime .pkg that you downloaded. Choose “Replace” instead of  “Actualize”

I’ve been told that this works and will downgrade you back to 7.3.1. This way you can wait to upgrade back up to 7.4 until Apple releases a more stable version. I haven’t actually done this myself since I never upgraded to 7.4 in the first place - so use this info at your own risk. Feel free to let me know the results.

    Wow you save my behind!

I installed the 10.4 update this morning and FCP automatically gave me a general error on startup. When I tried to capture from my deck it told me I should confirm that my capture settings were correct and restart, well my capture settings didn’t change.

I followed these instructions and everything is back to normal.

    THANKS!!!!!

    thank you! :)

It worked beautifully. I can now once again import my quicktime movies to After Effects and edit them. When the update was added, I couldn’t even import anything that was quicktime because After Effects didn’t recognize the file type. Thanks for saving my butt at work!

    BIG PROBLEM!!!!
    HELP!!!!

Here’s the story. I did this same thing, but with QT 7.2 instead of 7.3, and with instructions from another website, which didn’t mention anything about “replace” and “actualize”. So I did the process, and after Pacifist verified all the files, it asked me to “replace” or “update”. ?

I chose update, then when the thing finished, I tried opening a file in QT and AAAHHH!!! The icon on the dock bounced twice then stopped, with no arrow below it. The file didn’t open. When I open my iTunes, it closes immediately, so does iPhoto and System Preferences!

I decided to see if I could software update back to 7.4, which I did, but it still didn’t work!

So I put the QT app in the trash and emptied it, then started up Pacifist again, did the same thing…IT DIDN’T ASK ME ABOUT AN UPDATE OR REPLACE THIS TIME. I let it finish the process, and now it STILL WON’T WORK!!!

I’m afraid to tinker with my system any more. What do I do?

Will this also work for windows xp?

I have no problem import .mov files.
The problem I have is when I place the .mov file into the timeline and start doing anything to it, AE CS3 stops responding every time.

have been away on vacation from work and I get back and boot up after effects 7 and I get this error:

    After Effects error: missing maxp

    (83 :: 4)

Any ideas on how to fix this, or even what it is? I’m sure no one was using After Effects while I was away, so I’m not sure why anythig would be different.

Thanks for any help, I’m guessing my best bet would be just to just re-install, but will I lose all my preferences and layout views? I’m on MAC OSX. Thanks!

ok, so I did that, and it didn’t work, however I found it occurs also if you install poorly designed fonts. I took those fonts off my computer and zapped the pram on restart and it works!!!

AHAHAHA! I thought software written by Apple doesn’t crash because it’s better etc.. Actually I know better, but the point is this story sounds just the same as it does on past windows updates or in fact other OS’s. Nothing is perfect and we must fiddle with software all the time no matter what. Kind of pointless to spend more for a mac to end up with a very similar situation. Plus a slow computer because apple rips people by giving them slower hardware for more money.

anyway, afteraffects cs5 is missing codecs for me.. Ok, back to work..
